ARISE YOGA | BROOKLYN + THE BAY AREA

Arise Yoga was founded on the belief that yoga is meant to be practiced primarily off the mat. That the flexibility and strength we develop from the asanas, the clarity discovered in meditation, the calm and energy cultivated through pranayama, and the connections we make between breath and body in classes - all must be translated into our daily life. To put it clearly, and succinctly: as a collective studio, and individual teachers and staff members, when issues come up, we use the teachings from our practice and we roll with it.

Transparency and Nonviolent Communication are the guiding principles of our relationships. Feedback and proactive checking in is how we develop programming and maintain strong ties to the needs of our communities. Generosity (putting our money where our priorities are) and consistent action is how we marry the quest for peace and the necessary disruption of social justice activism.

We practice yoga together, in these beautiful and thoughtfully designed spaces, so we can support each other’s practice out in the messy, gorgeous, imperfect, evolving world.

This logo symbolizes so much about our studio, our locations, and what we want to see happen through the teachings of yoga.

If you look closely, within this one symbol lives all the rest that follows:

Lift.
Emerge.
Come to light.
Appear.

We're built from developed and lived knowledge; we cannot pretend to reside in darkness. We share this light with the world through the practices of yoga, mindfulness, kindness, and love.

Arise Founder, Jillian Schiavi, lives yoga in all aspects of her life. She’s taught students across the United States for more than a decade, and has a strong passion for encouraging people to live what they learn in the studio out into their daily lives. She’s an artist, a community-builder, a dedicated listener, coach, partner, and poet.

Opening and reopening yoga studios in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and Grand Lake, Oakland during the pandemic strengthened her resolve even more to help create spaces for modern yogis to gather, find solace, breathe, and become more aware humans on the planet.

In 2023, Jillian is adding the Pacific Heights, San Francisco and Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn locations to the Arise team of studios. Each built from the same founding principles, these studios live the Arise mission to provide sanctuary spaces for the community living there.

Jillian lives bicoastal, and travels back and forth between the Brooklyn and Bay Area studios. She now teaches alongside her son River, so there will typically be some baby/toddler energy in her classes as she raises him in an environment of yoga. Catch her classes when she’s on your coast!
